SJO suits Central Valley → Carara, Monteverde, Sarapiquí, highland Savegre, and onward Osa/Tortuguero routing. LIR suits Guanacaste dry-forest add-ons and north Pacific bases—birding inventory may be thinner than classic SJO loops. Choose the airport that matches your lodging plan.

Plan at least two nights per primary hub so you keep one full dawn–late-morning window without a transfer day stealing it. Three nights help when weather or rain windows intervene. Rushing three hubs in three days usually burns the chorus.

All three work with a patient guide. Carara offers accessible transition-forest trails and macaw context; Monteverde is cooler cloud forest with mud and mist; Sarapiquí is humid lowland rainforest. Mixed groups often start Central Pacific or Sarapiquí, then add a highland night if time allows.
